What are the differences between wire rope electric hoist and chain electric hoist?

In industrial production, wire rope electric hoists and chain electric hoists are often seen lifting machinery. When we see them, we think they are both lifting heavy objects, and there seems to be little difference. Why do we choose different products when there is a lifting demand in different areas? Let’s analyze their differences.

Structure and materials

Wire rope electric hoist: mainly uses wire rope as the lifting medium. Wire rope has the characteristics of high strength, smooth operation, low noise, high toughness and wear resistance. The main components of the hoist include motor, reducer, drum, wire rope and hook, etc. The structure is simple, compact and firm, and the lifting height is high. Chain electric hoist: uses a ring chain (usually an alloy steel chain) as the lifting medium, and the chain is driven by a sprocket. The main components of the hoist include motor, reducer, sprocket, chain and hook, etc.

Carrying capacity

Wire rope electric hoist: usually has a large carrying capacity, which can reach tens of tons or even hundreds of tons, suitable for heavy industrial applications. Chain electric hoist: generally has a smaller carrying capacity, and the common carrying range is from a few hundred kilograms to a few tons, suitable for light and medium lifting tasks.

Installation method

Wire rope electric hoist: usually installed on a fixed track, can be moved horizontally or fixed in a specific position. Chain electric hoist: has greater installation flexibility, can be hung on different brackets, or installed on a mobile trolley, convenient for use in multiple locations.

From this we can conclude that wire rope electric hoists are suitable for use in these places:

Large factories, warehouses, docks and other places: **These places need to lift heavy objects with large tonnage and high lifting height. The wire rope electric hoist has the characteristics of large rated lifting capacity, high lifting height and stable operation, making it a commonly used lifting equipment in these places. Outdoor work places: The wire rope electric hoist has good tensile strength and wear resistance, and is suitable for outdoor windy and sunny working environments. Precision work places: The wire rope electric hoist has the characteristics of stable operation and low noise, making it suitable for places with high requirements for operation precision and noise.

In these places, electric chain hoists are more needed

Small factories, workshops, shops and other places: These places need to lift small tonnage and low lifting height. The chain electric hoist has the characteristics of light structure, small size, light weight and relatively low price, making it a commonly used lifting equipment in these places. Places with high space requirements: The chain electric hoist is small in size and light in weight, suitable for places with narrow space. Places with high explosion-proof performance requirements:The chain electric hoist has good explosion-proof performance and is suitable for flammable and explosive places.

So let’s summarize. If you need to lift a higher height or the cargo is too heavy, you need a wire rope electric hoist. If you need a high explosion-proof level or just want a cheaper product, a chain electric hoist is more worth considering.
